I remember driving 2 hours away to see this movie in theaters, because it wasn't playing in my city (and I live in the 3rd largest city in my state). I also remembering thinking how much it was worth it. This movie is incredible. Granted, it's NOT for everyone. It is 3 hours long, and very slow-paced. Some people will get bored with it. But for those with a mind for film, for great, grandiose pictures, this is the pinnacle. I liked Boogie Nights, but P.T. Anderson hit it out the park with Magnolia. The ensemble cast is superb (especially John C. Reilly, William H. Macy, and Philip Seymour Hoffman), the interweaving storylines are impeccably done, the integrated soundtrack by Aimee Mann gives it a haunting ambiance, and the overall feel of the movie is just golden. It will be a long time (if ever) before I find a movie strong enough to kick this one out of my #1 spot in my Top 10 list.

"Magnolia [Blu-ray]" Overview
Nine people's lives are woven together through coincidence, chance, and divine intervention.
"Magnolia [Blu-ray]" Specifications
A handful of people in the San Fernando Valley are having one hell of a day. TV mogul Earl Partridge (Jason Robards) is on his deathbed; his trophy wife (Julianne Moore) is popping pills with alarming frequency. Earl's nurse (Philip Seymour Hoffman) is trying desperately to get in touch with Earl's only son, sex guru Frank T.J. Mackey (Tom Cruise), who's about to have his carefully constructed past blown by a TV reporter (April Grace). Whiz kid Stanley (Jeremy Blackman) is being goaded by his selfish dad into breaking the record for the game show What Do Kids Know? Meanwhile, Stanley's predecessor, the grown-up quiz kid Donnie Smith (William H. Macy) has lost his job and is nursing a severe case of unrequited love. And the host of What Do Kids Know?, the affable Jimmy Gator (Philip Baker Hall), like Earl, is dying of cancer, and his attempt to reconcile with his cokehead daughter (Melora Walters) fails miserably. She, meanwhile, is running hot and cold with a cop (John C. Reilly) who would love to date her, if she can sit still for long enough. And over it all, a foreboding sky threatens to pour something more than just rain.
This third feature from Paul Thomas Anderson (Boogie Nights) is a maddening, magnificent piece of filmmaking, and it's an ensemble film to rank with the best of Robert Altman--every little piece of the film means something, and it's solidly there for a reason. Deftly juggling a breathtaking ensemble of actors, Anderson crafts a tale of neglectful parents, resentful children, and love-starved souls that's amazing in scope, both thematically and emotionally. Part of the charge of Magnolia is seeing exactly how may characters Anderson can juggle, and can he keep all those balls in air (indeed he can, even if it means throwing frogs into the mix). And it's been far too long since we've seen a filmmaker whose love of making movies is so purely joyful, and this electric energy is reflected in the actors, from Cruise's revelatory performance to Reilly's quietly powerful turn as the moral center of the story. While at three hours it's definitely not suited to everyone's taste, Magnolia is a compelling, heartbreaking, ultimately hopeful mediation on the accidents of chance that make up our lives. Featuring eight wonderful songs by Aimee Mann, including "Save Me." --Mark Englehart

The greatest film ever made - Humble filmmaker -
This might be the best film ever made. I have now seen it at least a dozen times and it literally gets better every time. Nothing comes quite as close to peeking under the surface of the big everything. Anderson is a shayaman of film, and obviously blu ray is the only way to watch anything. Saw detail I never knew existed.
Stupid Near Ending With Large Frogs Falling Out From The Sky - Siffert - NM, USA
I really liked this movie until near the ending where for some dumbo reason large frogs started falling out the sky. Really dumb, not to mention gross. This coming from one who has seen his large share of stupid movies amd dumb scenes but this one takes the cake. I mean, how difficult would it have been to have the same scenes be more realistic (and in line with the rest of the movie) with hail, say, the size of baseballs, or even softballs falling from the sky? I think I'll edit it myself with my software editing programs.
Warped Eclectic Vignettes - Loyd E. Eskildson - Phoenix, AZ.
"Magnolia" was released in 1999 and has a star-studded cast (John C. Reilly, Julianne Moore, Tom Cruise, William H. Macy, Phillip Seymour Hoffman, Jason Robards and more....) that do their best to get this contrived story of random lives coming together for a strange, contrived climax. It is a movie that only certain people will enjoy. It was unbelievable overall, and the plots contrived to fit the ending. The movie has both comedy and poignant scenes as the vignettes strive to gain your interest. The lives of several people in the San Fernando Valley hit a wall together and we watch the unbelievable blow up before our eyes-including frogs falling from the skies.
Overall, it is hard to follow and the outrageous plots tire one's imagination.
